Footprints have been a core part of ROMEO for 20 years. They are meant to make flirting easy, help break the ice, and save us all from reading “Hi” a hundred times.

We have some news, and we want to share it with you as openly and honestly as possible. Our update is a big change, and we know it might stir some emotions—especially if you’ve been using Footprints for years (or even decades!). But before you grab your torches and pitchforks, hear us out.

Less is more

With our last update in 2022, we increased the number of Footprints to 36. But after analyzing the data, we saw that casual and new users weren’t engaging as much anymore and the engagement dropped. The choices seemed overwhelming. Unfortunately, important ones were getting lost—especially on mobile, where users had to scroll.

We tried to fix this with the “Your last used Footprints” feature, but that only made it worse, as the variety of used Footprints declined even further. Always keep in mind—you may know all Footprints inside and out, but the people you send them to most likely do not.

Now we’re taking a more radical step by reducing our Footprints to make them easy to understand, especially for casual users. To prevent some Footprints from being ignored again, we set a clear limitation: all must be visible at once on a mobile screen, which means we had to narrow it down to 12.

12 Footprints with purpose

Simply choosing the most popular ones would have been too easy. We want to give each Footprint a clear purpose. They should all help users flirt, initiate chats, and make new connections:

Next, we want to refine our Event Footprints, which will be available only during specific times or in certain locations. You may have noticed that we reserved some space for them. We will follow up with our users to find out which Footprints would be especially relevant for your country.
