QBoy – Music & Clubbing

QBoy is half Canarian (Canary Islands) half English and fully gorgeous. This handsome DJ promotes an all female vocals hip-hop night in London and Berlin called R & She. The vocals are female, but the crowd is queer. QBoy has also worked on projects tackling bullying in schools, but we’ll save this noble topic for next time. This interview will be all about the music.

We asked QBoy to give us a little more detail on his influences, the meaning behind one of his latest tracks, and his opinion on the future of music.

In Conversation

Who do you take your inspirations from?

The people I grew up listening to: Salt-N-Pepa, Lil’ Kim, Erykah Badu, even Tricky… they still inspire me now. Especially Salt-N-Pepa. When I perform live I always like to put on a show, with dancers and choreography, which seems standard now, but back in the 80’s and 90’s, very few hip-hop acts were performance acts, except Salt-N-Pepa. Most rappers just walked up and down the stage, which I found very boring.

Tell me about Show Me Your Deck. It’s such a fun song, but it also looks like it’s trying to comment on gay culture, what might that comment be?

Whether you’re gay or not, most of us with a smartphone have used a dating app or site of some kind, sent nude photos of ourselves on WhatsApp, or sexted with someone. So, I’m commenting on how technology has become synonymous with how we as a species communicate sexually.

It’s a totally new way of behaving and forming relationships. Gay men in particular certainly have made great use of the new tech available to them, including myself, so I am expressing something I do everyday and I presume other people can identify with that because they do it too!

On top of this, I love men’s bulges, especially when you are walking down the street and you see a fit guy in some hot tracksuit sweat pants and visible dick-line.

What do you think the future of queer artists in music is? (Would you refer to yourself as queer or gay? or anything else?)

I find ‘gay’ quite a limiting term, and QBoy is short for QueerBoy, so I identify better as queer. I think we have already seen a massive growth in the amount of LGBTQ artists coming out, or being given airtime if they’re already out, so that will only grow.

Can you tell me a little about the party ‘R & She’ (especially when it comes to Berlin)?

R & She is a club night I run with Neil Prince and David Oh and it’s honestly the most fun I have ever had doing a party. We’ve been running for 5 years now in London, and we’ve been in Berlin for 2 years. We also pop up at various music festivals. R & She celebrates the queens of R&B and hip-hop from the 90’s to present day, we play all your favorite females from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Salt-N-Pepa and Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim and Remy Ma to Tinashe and TLC. We always attract a super friendly fun crowd who love to sing and dance all night long and we’ve always been blessed with a packed out dancefloor every time. It’s the best!

Follow R & She on Twitter or Facebook and listen to more of QBoy’s infectious tunes over on his website.
